Better is always good, no?

Ok, so I’ve been dabbling for the past year in content management systems, blogs, etc.  I’ve gone from plone to wordpress and everything in between.  Hosting is cheap so a sandbox is always readily available.  Unfortunately I just don’t know when to say “good enough”.  Always having a new idea doesn’t necessarily mean it is better, even if in terms of functionality, it is.

Case and point, i’ve been helping a friend put together a website about Geneva.  Something simple, a blog about what is going on etc.  Keep in mind this is just a hobby.

Well, the first thing I do is help him set up a wordpress account.  This works great, but we can’t add (at the time) the pages in the most perfect way.  So, having some knowledge of plone, I developed the same website there.  I was fine with this, but it was way too complicated for my friend.  So then I moved it to wordpress, but this time on my own installation so that we would have more flexibility with plug-ins, yet in a system which my friend could easily manipulate. This was great, but then one has to test everyting oneself (plug-ins, themes etc…) which means that there was always something not working.  In the end, we ended up bringing the site back to good ol’ wordpress.com

All that to say, sometimes better is not always good. And sometimes I just need to realise that things are “good enough”.
